We have helped to put £1 million back into UK business this year

Posted by Glyn Davison 18 January 2017 11:02 AM

At Harlands we like to help build better businesses. We get to know you so that we understand you, your business and the plans that you have for the future. This means that we partner with you to make these dreams come true. We are more than an accountancy firm and we listen to you in a way that the big firms don’t. One area that we have become an expert in is R&D tax credits. This is a government incentive that gives tax breaks for companies that invest in their future. You submit a claim to the HMRC and they will look at your business and assess how much you spend on R&D.

How could Brexit impact business owners?

Posted by Glyn Davison 29 June 2016 08:00 AM

At 6am on 24th June 2016 it was confirmed that the UK had voted to leave the European Union. Now please note we will not be leaving immediately and the UK is still a member of the EU (and will still remain so for several years). But the vote has already triggered an extraordinary chain of events.

Harlands go from Yellow to PLATINUM!

Posted by Glyn Davison 20 April 2015 03:15 PM

We are proud to announce we have earned Platinum Partner status with Xero, the global leader in online accounting software.

For those that don’t know, Xero is a leading provider of small business online accounting software that is accessible via the cloud anytime, anywhere. In this growing field, competition can be pretty stiff and Xero works with many respectable accountancy firms who help Xero’s clients implement their new software services. However, very few are awarded the title Platinum Partner. In fact, with around 950 accounting partners in the UK, we are now in the top 1% with only 9 other firms awarded the Platinum Status.

Posted by Glyn Davison 22 January 2015 09:50 AM

As everyone's now settled in to 2015 and most accountants (including us !!) deep into the stresses of self assessment tax returns, here at Harlands we're always focussing on the aspects of the service we provide that help add value to businesses. As everyone returns from the seasonal break, it's the perfect time to look at staff management options.

Why bother with performance management?

It’s one of the biggest buzz terms used by HR departments, but is it really worth the effort to invest in Performance Management? What exactly does it mean, how does it differ from the commonly used Appraisal approach and what benefit does it give to businesses?

How to be a Successful Accountant

Posted by Glyn Davison 22 October 2014 12:16 PM

We keep a close eye on the accountancy and tax world - its vast, complex and changing faster than at any time in history. When I first trained in practice we had one computer between ten of us and as a practice that made us forward thinking and cutting edge among our competitors! The accounting rules of the game (known as Generally Accepted Accounting Principles or GAAP for short)) were well established and really didn't change a great deal that world has changed and its just the start.

Learn From Those That Have Gone Before – Take Control!

Posted by Glyn Davison 03 September 2014 11:31 AM

Businesses that seek external advice and information are 14% more ambitious and 50% more successful than those that do not (BIS 2010).

I’ve met hundreds of small business owners during my career and there’s one thing that they have all shared - a strong desire to progress their business sometimes at all costs. The problem is that desire just isn't enough to grow a successful business - you need so much more. As an accountancy practice we do have an ideal insight into how different businesses work and it’s this that gives us an opportunity to engage with clients to share the good, the bad and the ugly. The challenge has always been that the clients we see are only a small percentage of all the businesses out there.

Is the Only Way to Win New Business By Reducing Your Prices?

Posted by Glyn Davison 10 December 2013 11:30 AM

Times are tough - to win enough work to keep everyone busy you have to be more "competitive" right?

I'm not a big fan of this strategy for small businesses - that's not to say it can't and doesn't work because at times it will. I'd prefer to take a long term view and cutting price to me is a step in the wrong direction. When I say that to clients they all react in the same way by saying, “so what am I supposed to do?”
